"Has the Vatican done something right? Yesterday, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture declared that Darwin's theory and Christian faith were not only compatible, but that Darwin's views could be traced to St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinus, The Times of London reports. Ravasi said, 'what we mean by evolution is the world as created by God.'
Organizers of next month's papal backed conference marking the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species also dismissed Intelligent Design, which credits a higher power for the complexities of life, as "poor theology and poor science" and will only discuss it on the fringes of the convention as a "cultural phenomenon." The recent admissions settle speculation that Pope Benedict XVI might endorse Intelligent Design, and come just in time for Darwin's 200th birthday."

How nice to hear. I'm sure this will be a great disappointment to some I know (in another state) who devote their lives to proselytizing creationism.
Thanks for the info, Elizabeth. And Happy Birthday, Mr. Darwin!
what??? Evolution is the foundation of all science??? That is probably the most ridiculous statement I have EVER READ. Evolution is a THEORY!!!!! What about that do you not understand? It's certainly a plausible theory, but a theory none the less. In case you didn't know, most college professors (I think the number is around 80%+ are liberals. So, it stands to reason that most college grads believe in Evolution. What the silly poll doesn't show are details. Such as, do you believe in Macro or Micro Evolution. There is a difference. Most people believe in some sort of evolution. To mock the ones who don't believe we came from monkeys is showing your ignorance to the debate. To date, there is absolutely NO PROOF or Evidence of Macro evolution of which Darwin fully believed. In other words, one species magically tranforming into an entirely different species.
What's even more astonishing is the increasingly popular belief in Intelligent Design, it's scientific also though college professors refuse to acknowledge the science behind it by saying it's a form of religion (now there's tolerance for you). This is basically why the famous athiest philosopher Anthony Flew changed his mind about being an athiest. Read his book, "there is a god." Of course, this takes a bit an open mind (as does evolution) something liberals seem to champion but lack. TO open your mind and read about Intelligent Design, does not mean you have to believe in Jesus or any particular religion at all. It only acknowledges the fact that an intelligent being had to orchestrate the chaos out there. It is entirely to complex, big and perfectly designed to have come from chance. You can't throw bicycle parts on the ground and expect it to become a bicycle on it's own if left to sit for millions of years. And to believe in macro evolution is to also believe those bicycle parts might possibly turn into a monkey in 500 million years. Quite ridiculous.
