It's working

Not long ago I posted that I had withheld judgement of the "Pecan Factory" issue because I believed that the "system" would resolve the problem. Well like a "stopped clock that's right twice a day" it seems I was right.

The State Attorney General and the MDAH are on the "Pecan Factory" case and I trust that it will be resolved in a fitting and proper way.

The resolution may not be punitive enough for some of you but it will be judiciously correct. I have noticed that it is the posting relative to matters of this kind that get your attention and that's understandable. Take a look at the number of comments and the subject matter of the posting and you'll see a clear trend. Stories about a 'man biting a dog get more attention than stories about a dog biting a man'.

In addition the Democrat has taken up the gauntlet and is giving the matter the attention it deserves. No less than three editors and reporters have recently published stories and editorials. I think I'll be able to follow what's happening just by "reading the papers".

I think the time has come to acknowledge that the "people" have spoken and been heard.

Let's give it a rest and watch it play out as it should.

We should not "give it a rest and let it play out as it should". Mr. Saleeby, what do you mean "give it a rest"? This process for justice has not come to a conclusion and the Attorney General's office and MDAH need to continue to hear from the people. Our work is not yet finished. Criminal charges need to be pursued. Phillip West has created a precedent of illegality in this state by defying orders and the mandate of a governmental entity, MDAH. He also broke the law when he disregarded the order from the Attorney General's office to cease demolition. Yes, it was in retrospect but West had an opportunity to stop demolition. He'd already, a year and a half ago, been told to leave his hands off that building by the AGs office. It's my understanding that no other community has ever defied MDAH by demolishing a landmarked building. His illegal actions should not stand with only a "slap on the wrist". He not only sets a precedent on the state level but his actions send a message to all of us, our young included, that it's ok to break the law. Oh, that law? Yes, even that law; if that law, any law.

Right on! Be sure to vote today in the Natchez Democrat poll on whether criminal charges should be filed (www.natchezdemocrat.com). Of course, it's not scientific and people do cheat.

Mr. Saleeby, what do you want to talk about? plagarism? Get with the program. We're here, in part, to discuss city politics which has long been drug through the dirt and mud of closed door deals, favoritism, segregation. I am, personally, sick of it. I'm sick that Phillip West uses "his people" to achieve his racist, bitter agenda. I'm sick of the racist comments I hear on a daily basis, even though subtle. I'm ready for a change in the South, this town, and the country as a whole...even the world. Love they neighbor as theyself. And, I believe, for the most part, that the majority of this community feels the same. But, there are a few, West included, who wish to keep stirring the pot of racial strife and turmoil. How else will he accomplish his "dreams"? He's failed as a leader in this community, even among "his own people". Now, wake up and smell the roses; we have work to do.

I think it's wake up and smell the coffee...but I like roses too. After all, it's Valentine's Day tomorrow. So, Mr. Saleeby, a rose for you. Hope I haven't offended you. And thank you for your participation.

Thank you for validating my point.

For everyone who thinks tarring and feathering and being taken out of town on a rail isn't enough there is at least one who thinks a slap on the wrist is too much.

The justice system is a long, complex, detail, driven exercise partially to wring out passion and proceed to conclusion strictly on the facts under law.

Ultimately only the opinions of thirteen (1 judge and 12 jurors)"people" count.

The "system" has it and I feel it will proceed (however slowly) to a judicious end.

Mr. Saleeby you are correct. The effort is best focused on doing something positive for the community in a proactive and positive manner.

Am I missing something? No matter what they do or don't do in the courts its not going to put Humpty Dumpty together again.....

Don't know if that's true. It's not irrational to wonder if a Court might IN FACT order them to put it back.

I've seen cities in Europe that were nothing but rubble after WW2 and they look like pristine cities hundreds of years old. Look older than 1716.

I am aghast by John Saleeby's suggestion that the citizens should just SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP.

Why...come to think of it...that's exactly what Mayor West and the Aldermen have been telling the people for 2 years now!

Well, I guess Saleeby will be running for office soon.

I'm disgusted.

This blog is supposed to be the voice of the people.

If Mr. Saleeby wants to write about roses and valentines, he should join the staff of the Democrat.

Could there perhaps be a soul who would prefer a dilapidated building over a new set of condominiums in downtown? If so.....with what good reasoning? It seems the historians are satisfied to the blue prints and the property is stable. For heaven's sake they are talking about a luxury condominium complex.......not a nuclear waste pit. Cease the beatings for this is one dead horse.

Whether we approve of the condos or not is beside the point right now. The point is the Mayor has blatantly defied the law. Will he get away with it?

This is certainly not about "new condos" but the legality of the mayor's actions. And since you brought up condos vs. delapidated building you've missed the point. From the beginning, whether the building remained, though it could have taken on a new life and image, was not at issue. The legality of the sale is contested, the manner in which it was "sold", contrary to the requirements of the law. Yes, condos are fine, just not on our public bluff. By the way, who says the bluff is stable? 7:43, you must know more than the rest of us and even more than MDAH who are supposed to get the word on "stable" along with two other required conditions...before demolition.

I've heard from several friends who were having lunch at the Castle on Tue. Feb. 6, that Bob Pollard, Everett Sanders, Larry Brown and other city leaders had lunch in the small room off the main dining room. Was that a MEETING? Was our city business discussed? I think there are rules of law regarding such conduct. That was just 2 days before the building's demise. From what I understand Bob Pollard greeted the sight of demolition with glee and delight as he shared this moment of glory with L. Brown.

Re: Anon 11:03 pm.
With the sneaky behavior and back room deals made by our city leaders, it does cause one to question their motives. While I would like to believe this was an innocent lunch, their history would dictate otherwise.
If Bob P shared a moment of glory with Larry Brown then Bob P. naively believes he is one of the pack and running with the 'big dogs'. The Brown-Worley-West et al
group will use him for their needs, then discard him like yesterdays newspaper.

I agree. I guess the "big stuff" got the best of him.

I bet all the people posting here who believe that it was perfectly fine for Mayor West to break the law are members of the City Council!

Our new federal courthouse was dilapidated just a few years ago. Now it is restored.

The point is not the PF was dilapidated.

The point is that the Mayor willingly, knowingly broke local, state and probably federal laws. And, he probably committed a few crimes along the way.

In his statement to the Democrat, he accuses the MDAH of breaking the law. What a joke!

Sorry it took so long for me to catch it.

Bob Pollard does not know his "butt" from a hole in the ground. He is a total idiot when it comes to running the city. He is the board's greatest waffle. Whatever it popular will get his support. Does he have the mind to think for himself? Heck no!!!

Add him to the list of replacements for the 2008 election.

Thought personal attacks were not allowed here?

This is not a personal attack. It is a statement of truth about one of our "pathetic" elected officials.

Bob Pollard and all the rest of the current board needs to be sent home in 2008. They are ABSOLUTE FAILURES AT WHAT THEY HAVE ATTEMPTED TO DO --- LEAD OUR CITY.

This entire administration is a joke. The only successful members of this city government are those who retired or left for other reasons while these "people of embarassment" are leading our city.

I solicit everyone's support in helping to unelect all elected city officials in 2008!!!!
